SererSerera people of the Republic of Senegal inhabiting the environs of the city of Diourbel and the lower reaches of the Niel-umole River southeast of Dakar. Population approximately 600,000 (1973, estimate). About 4,000 Serer also live in Gambia. The Serer language belongs to the Atlantic (Western Bantoid) language group. Some Serer speak Wolof. The religion of the Serer is Islam. Their chief occupations are the cultivation of peanuts, millet, and rice and, on the coast, fishing. Seasonal migratory work is common on the peanut plantations.
