Volkhov Reservoir

 

a reservoir formed by the dam of the V. I. Lenin Volkhov Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Volkhov River in Leningrad and Novgorod oblasts of the RSFSR. Formed in 1926 for power generation and navigation. It consists of two parts: a river section and a lake section (the reservoir backs up into Lake Il’men’). Area, 1,120 sq km; volume, 3 cu km; length of river section of the Volkhov Reservoir, 200 km. The level of the reservoir varies as much as 3 m. The reservoir regulates seasonal flow. Fishing is carried on for bream, pike perch, pike, and whitefish.
