Abramtsevo-Kudrino Ornamental Carving
Abramtsevo-Kudrino Ornamental Carving
a type of wood carving.
It originated in the studio organized in 1882 by E. D. Polenova in the country estate of Abramtsevo, uniting local experts from the villages of Kudrino, Akhtyrka, and others. The Khot’kovo factory of carved handicrafts turns out domestic articles and souvenirs such as small chests, platters, and similar items; their polished surfaces are ornamented with the usually bas-relief Abramtsevo carvings—plant and geometrical decorative patterns and bird and animal figures. Khot’kovo, Zagorsk Raion, Moscow Oblast, where the factory is located, is also the site of the Abramtsevo artistic industrial school, which prepares specialists in Abramtsevo ornamental carving. Among the best masters of Abramtsevo ornamental carving are V. P. Vornoskov, M. V. Artem’ev, A. I. Guliaeva, and T. V. Al’khimovich.
