Varnhagen von Ense, Karl August Varnhagen von Ense, Karl August (kärl ou`go͝ost färn`hägən fən ĕn`zə), 1785–1858, German poet, historian, and journalist. He collaborated with Chamisso and other writers and wrote Biographische Denkmaler [biographical monuments] (5 vol., 1824–30). The Berlin salon of his wife, Rahel Antoine Friederike Levin Varnhagen von Ense (1771–1833), was frequented by leading romantics, among them Heine, Gutzkow, and Laube. |
