pressure altitude[′presh·ər ‚al·tə‚tüd] (meteorology) The height above sea level at which the existing atmospheric pressure would be duplicated in the standard atmosphere; atmospheric pressure expressed as height according to a standard scale. pressure altitudeAn atmospheric pressure expressed in terms of altitude which corresponds to that pressure in the standard atmosphere (ICAO). It is the height of an aircraft as measured from an assumed sea level atmospheric pressure level of 1013.2 hectopascals (hPa) or 29.92 of mercury (Hg). This is used to indicate flight levels and as a common setting for the cruising level. When aircraft are flying at a given pressure altitude, their height above mean sea level is not constant; it varies depending on the variation of pressure prevalent at the height from the standard pressure.
