Prespa

 

a lake in the western Balkan Peninsula, in Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece. Located in an intermontane tectonic basin at an elevation of 853 m, it covers an area of 285 sq km and reaches a depth of 54 m. The northern and eastern shores are gently sloping and have a somewhat even shoreline, whereas the southern and western shores are steep and have deep inlets. Lake Prespa is joined by a channel about 1 km long to the shallow Lake Mitri-Prespa, located to the south. It may have subsurface drainage through karst cavities into Lake Ohrid, which lies 16 km to the northwest and is 158 m lower in elevation. Annual variations in Lake Prespa’s water level are between 1.5 and 2 m. There is fishing on the lake.
