Smolensk Upland

Smolensk Upland

an upland that extends from the city of Orsha to the upper reaches of the Voria and Moskva rivers, chiefly in Smolensk Oblast of the RSFSR. The upland attains a maximum elevation of 314 m southwest of Viaz’ma. Its westernmost part is composed chiefly of Devonian dolomites and limestones; east of Smolensk the upland is composed of Carboniferous limestones, clays, and marls. Most of the area has a morainic erosion topography; in the northwest there are large hills and ridges. The upland is covered by broadleaf forests with an admixture of spruce or spruce forests with an admixture of broadleaf species, growing on soddy, medium-podzolized loamy soils. [23–1843–]
