Location:48 miles east of Houston and 44 miles west of Beaumont, Texas, on Highway 90.
Facilities:Boat ramp, fishing pier (é), butterfly/hummingbird garden, primitive trails.
Activities:Fishing, hunting, wildlife observation, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking.
Special Features:Some 275 species of birds can be found in the bottomland forests and associated wetlands in eastern Texas and 100 bird species are known to breed there. It has been documented that Trinity River NWR is home to at least 620 plant species and more than 400 vertebrate species.
Habitats: 21,000 acres of floodplain/wetland including bottomland hardwood forests, forested swamps, cultivated pastures, open water, and wet pastures.
Access: Public entry by walk-in is permitted year-round from sunrise to sunset. Some tracts may be closed during hunting season.
Wild life: White-tailed deer, squirrels, freshwater turtles, alligators, snakes, river otters, bald eagle, butterflies, pelicans, cormorants, herons, yellow-bellied sapsucker, and woodpeckers.
