Payer, Julius von

(pī`ər), 1842–1915, Austrian explorer and painter. While on an expedition (1872–74) to navigate the Northeast PassageNortheast Passage,
water route along the northern coast of Europe and Asia, between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Beginning in the 15th cent., efforts were made to find a new all-water route to India and China.

Born Sept. 1, 1842, in Schönau, near Teplice; died Aug. 30, 1915, in Veldes, now Bled, Yugoslavia. Austrian arctic explorer.

Together with K. Weyprecht, Payer led an arctic expedition aboard the Tegetthoff from 1872 to 1874. The mission led to the discovery of Franz Josef Land. Payer described the voyage in his book Seven Hundred and Twenty-five Days Amid Arctic Ice (1876; Russian translation, 1935).
