[′sep·rə·bəl di′grē] (mathematics) Let E be an algebraic extension of a field F, and let ƒ be any embedding of F in a field L such that L is the algebraic closure of the image of F under ƒ; the separable degree of E over F is the number of distinct embeddings of E in L which are extensions of ƒ.
