Stabiae
an ancient Italian city on the Gulf of Naples, 15 km from Mount Vesuvius. Originally a settlement of the Oscans, Sta-biae later became a fortified city of the Roman Republic. Today it is located near the city of Castellammare di Stabia.
Stabiae was destroyed by Sulla in 89 B.C. Later restored, it was buried in 79 B.C. in the eruption of Vesuvius, during which Pliny the Elder perished. Excavations conducted in the late 18th century and in the 1950’s have uncovered an ancient settlement, tombs dating from the fourth century B.C., inscriptions, household objects, and villas with the remains of Pompeian wall decorations.
