Paxillus
Paxillus a genus of hymenomycetous mushrooms of the group of gill fungi. The best-known species, P. involutus, has a brownish yellow impressed cap measuring 6–20 cm in diameter and having a tightly curved tomentose margin. The gills are slightly separated from the flesh of the cap; the thallus is short and thick. The flesh darkens in air. The mushrooms most commonly grow in groups in sunny birch forests from June to October. Consumption of the mushrooms raw often causes poisoning. |
