Suffete the highest official in Carthage and other Phoenician cities of the western Mediterranean region. A board of two annually elected suffetes exercised executive and judicial authority, subject to an oligarchic 104-member council. The office of suffete was unsalaried. Suffetes were elected from the aristocracy—for example, from the Magonid and Barca families. |
