Smith, David Eugene

(1860–1944) mathematician; born in Cortland, N.Y. An early career in law (1881–84) was abandoned for mathematics. Teaching longest at Columbia University (1901–26), he was librarian of the American Mathematical Society (1902–20), editor of several mathematical journals and encyclopedias, author of over 40 math texts, and an extensive traveler and book collector.
