Pavel Orlovskii
Orlovskii, Pavel Efimovich
Born Oct. 4 (16), 1896, in the village of Borovets, Smolensk Province. Soviet jurist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953). Member of the CPSU since 1926. Professor at Moscow State University since 1958.
Orlovskii graduated from the social science department of Leningrad State University in 1925. He served as a member of the Supreme Court of the USSR from 1938 to 1952, becoming deputy chairman in 1948. From 1952 to 1958 he was director of the Institute of State and Law of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Between 1958 and 1971 he was head of the subdepartment of civil law of the law department of Moscow State University.
Orlovskii’s main works are on Soviet civil law; he is a coauthor of textbooks on Soviet civil law published in 1938, 1960, and 1970. He made an important contribution to court practice in civil cases.
