Iakovlev, Pavel Nikanorovich
Born June 28 (July 10), 1898; died Sept. 9, 1957. Soviet breeder and fruit grower. Student and follower of I. V. Michurin. Academician of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1948). Member of the CPSU from 1942.
From 1935 to 1957, Iakovlev directed the principal division of the I. V. Michurin Central Genetic Laboratory in Michurinsk. During that time he was also a professor at the Institute of Fruitgrowing. Iakovlev specialized in the selection and genetics of fruit and berry plants. He developed several new types of pears that are now widely cultivated (Osenniaia Iakovleva, Liubimitsa Iakovleva, Severianka). Iakovlev received the State Prize of the USSR in 1941.
