Smiltene

a city in Valka Raion, Latvian SSR. Smiltene is situated on the Abula River, a tributary of the Gauja, 5 km from the Riga-Pskov highway. Industries include fruit canning and metalworking, and there is a logging and timber distribution establishment. The city has a sovkhoz technicum.
