automated stock trading

The trading of securities without the direct assistance of a broker or specialist. Generally, automated stock trading involves investor trading of securities via computer. Security bid and ask prices are listed and are continually updated with executions occurring automatically when the orders are entered. Although fully automated trading has been restricted primarily to professional and institutional investors, an increasing number of brokerage firms are now offering some automation for individual investors. Also called computerized investing. Compare Small Order Execution System.
