bailli
bailli (ˈbeɪlɪ) n a variant of bailieBailli
Bailli one of the royal officials of medieval France. The position of the bailli as the highest administrative figure in the region of his jurisdiction (bailliage) was established in northern France in the late 12th century. The bailli had very broad powers, chiefly judicial. In the 15th and 16th centuries the bailli’s range of functions was narrowed, and his significance declined. During the French Revolution the bailli’s post was abolished. REFERENCESArdashev, P. N. Frantsuzskii bailli.... Kiev, 1910. Dupont-Ferrier, G. Les officiers royaux des bailliages. ... Paris, 1902. |
