Bailey, Anna

Bailey, Anna (b. Warner) “Mother Bailey”

(1758–1851) heroine; born in Groton, Conn. She figured prominently in heroic situations during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. In 1781, she brought her aunt and cousins to where her uncle lay dying during the battle of Groton Heights (an incident that became a well-known story). She married the local postmaster, Elijah Bailey. In 1813 she gave her flannel petticoat to be used as cartridge wadding, as the town of Groton defended itself against British cannon fire. This episode was celebrated in story and song.
