An NHS inpatient who is temporarily absent from a ward by previous arrangement, for at least one night and up to 5 days (up to 28 days for mental health patients), because he or she was allowed to go home temporarily, or was transferred to another hospital and expected to return or was transferred from a long-stay specialty to another specialty in the same hospital and is expected to return, in both of which cases the patient’s transfer will be regarded as a separate inpatient episode in the receiving hospital or specialty.
