Sucksmith ring balance

[¦sək‚smith ′riŋ ‚bal·əns] (engineering) A magnetic balance in which the specimen is rigidly suspended from a phosphor bronze ring carrying two mirrors that convert small deflections of the specimen in a nonuniform magnetic field into large deflections of a light beam; used chiefly to measure paramagnetic susceptibility.
