Thuringian Forest a forested mountainous region in E central Germany, rising over 900 m (3000 ft.) Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald), a mountain range in the German Democratic Republic and the German Federal Republic. The forest extends approximately 100 km and has a maximum elevation of 982 m (Mount Beerberg). It has the geological structure of a horst composed of gneisses, granites, porphyries, and schists. The peaks are rounded and the slopes steep. The slopes have forests of spruce, fir, and pine. |
