Waerden, Bartel Leendert Van Der
Born Feb. 2, 1903, in Amsterdam. Mathematician. A Dutchman by nationality.
Van der Waerden has been a professor at the universities of Groningen (from 1928), Leipzig (1931-45), Amsterdam
(from 1948), and Zürich (from 1951). His major works are on algebra and algebraic geometry. His book Modern Algebra (1930-31; Russian translation, parts 1 and 2, 1934-37; 2nd edition, parts 1 and 2, 1947) concluded the period of the creation of modern “general” algebra. He has also devoted attention to the history of mathematics and astronomy in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Babylon.
