Ravdonikas, Vladislav Iosifovich

 

Born Nov. 27 (Dec. 9), 1894, in Tikhvin, in what is now Leningrad Oblast; died Nov. 28, 1976, in Leningrad. Soviet archaeologist and historian specializing in prehistoric society and the ancient history of the USSR. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946).

Ravdonikas became a professor of Leningrad University in 1931. He excavated burial mounds of the feudal era in the northwestern USSR, the Neolithic Olenii Island burial ground, and the ancient Russian city of Ladoga Staraia. He studied the petroglyphs of the Lake Onega and White Sea areas.

Ravdonikas was a member of the Academy of Sciences of Norway from 1946.
