plate glass

A high-quality glass sheet having both its flat sides plane and parallel so that it is free of distortions and flaws; has much greater mechanical strength than ordinary window glass; usually formed by a rolling process, then ground and polished, but can also be formed by the float-glass process, in which molten glass floats on a layer of molten metal to smooth out surface irregularities, producing a flat sheet of glass when the temperature of the molten metal is gradually reduced.
