Vorona


Vorona

 

a river in the Penza, Tambov, and Voronezh oblasts, RSFSR. A right tributary of the Khoper River (Don Basin). Length, 454 km; basin area, 13,200 sq km. The source of the Vorona is in the Kerensk-Chembar Upland. It is a plains river with a high right bank and a low, terraced left bank. Its valley has deciduous forests, and its basin has more than 600 lakes. The Vorona is fed by snow. Its mean annual discharge of water at the town of Borisoglebsk is 41.5 cu m per sec. It freezes over at the beginning of December and thaws out and opens up again at the beginning of April. The river’s principal tributary is the Chembar (from the left). Located on the Vorona are the towns of Borisoglebsk and Kirsanov.
