Tetralin
Tetralin
(or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene), a colorless liquid with an odor similar to that of naphthalene. Tetralin has a boiling point of 207.6°C and density of 0.970 g/cm3 at 20°C. It is insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents.
Tetralin is contained in the diesel fractions of petroleum and in coal oil. Produced industrially by the catalytic hydrogenation of naphthalene, it is used as an ingredient in degreasing substances, as a solvent in the paint and varnish industry, as a motor fuel additive, and as the raw material in the synthesis of certain dye intermediates.
