Long an educational center, Sendai is home to Tohoku Univ. and other institutions. In the 17th cent. the city was the stronghold of the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune. The Osaki Hachiman Shrine (built 1606) is there. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused extensive devastation in Sendai.Sendaia city in Japan, located on the northeastern part of the island of Honshu. Capital of Miyagi Prefecture. Population, 545,000 (1973). A port and railroad junction, Sendai is one of the centers of the Tohoku economic region. Enterprises for refining oil, producing electrical energy, building machinery, and working wood are found on Sendai Bay. There are metallurgical, textile, and food industries.
