Part of the Lille urban area, Roubaix, with adjacent Tourcoing, was one of the largest textile (chiefly wool) centers in France, but it greatly declined economically in the late 20th cent.; a national textile school is there. The La Piscine Museum of Art and Industry is there. Roubaix was occupied by the Germans during both World Wars.Roubaixa city in northern France, in Nord Department. Population, 115,000 (1968). Together with the cities of Lille, Tourcoing, and others, Roubaix forms a single agglomeration (population, 881,000). Long a major center for the wool (spinning and weaving), cotton-cloth, and knitwear industries, Roubaix has clothing factories. There is lace production and the manufacture of textile machinery.
