Established: 1980.
Location:94 miles northwest of the U.S./Canada border, and 205 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska.
Facilities:Visitor center, viewing sites, hiking trails, auto tour route, campsites.
Activities:Camping, boating, canoeing, fishing, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Thousands of birds migrate through the refuge each spring on their way to other nesting areas throughout Alaska. At least 115 species remain on the refuge to nest and raise their young.
Habitats: 730,000 acres of mountains, rivers, forest, tundra, and wetlands.
Access: Unlimited, except by weather.
Wild life: Sandhill cranes, green-winged teal, ring-necked ducks, ruddy ducks, owls, hawks, black-billed magpie, and Pacific loons. Also red fox, snowshoe hare, spruce grouse, wolves, black and brown bear, lynx, moose, Dall sheep, and caribou.
