Vietminh

(full name, Vietnam Doc Lap Dong Minh— League of Struggle for the Independence of Vietnam), the national united front organization of Vietnam from 1941 to 1951. It was established in May 1941 on the initiative of the Communist Party of Indochina. In addition to the Communist Party of Indochina, the Vietminh comprised trade union, youth, women’s, and peasant organizations. Later, its composition was extended to include representatives of the petite and national bourgeoisie (Democratic Party, June 1944), as well as of the prosperous peasants and patriotically oriented landowners. After the victory in Vietnam of the August Revolution of 1945 and the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on Sept. 2, 1945, the Vietminh gained a majority of seats in the National Assembly in the general elections in 1946—230 seats out of 300. That same year the Socialist Party, established in 1946 and comprising part of the intelligentsia, joined the Vietminh. In March 1951 during the Vietnamese People’s War of Resistance of 1945-54, the Vietminh joined with the Lien Viet organization (the National Alliance, founded in 1946) to create a new national united front organization of Vietnam, which assumed the name Lien Viet.
