On the southwestern border of OH, west of Dayton; organized Mar 1, 1808 from Montgomery and Butler counties. Name Origin: For Capt. Edward Preble (1761-1807), commander of the U.S.S Constitution, which bombarded Tripoli in 1804 during the war against the Barbary pirates.
