small meal syndrome small meal syndrome A clinical feature of chronic mesenteric ischemia in which dull or cramping periumbilical abdominal pain develops 10-30 mins after eating; the pain gradually ↑ in severity, plateaus then subsides within 1-3 hrs; initially the pain only occurs with large meals and Pts may obtain some relief by assuming a prone position or squatting, but with ↑ severity of ischemia, becomes unbearable; it may be accompanied by bloating, flatulence, constipation, and diarrhea, and ultimately forces its victims to eat minimalist rations–resulting in significant weight loss |
