Rotert, Vladislav Adol’fovich
Born July 25 (Aug. 6), 1863, in Vilnius; died Jan. 3 (16), 1916, in Petrograd. Russian botanist of Polish origin. Member of the Kraków Academy of Sciences (1912; corresponding member, 1899).
Rotert graduated from the University of Dorpat (Tartu) in 1884. He was a professor at the universities of Kazan (1896), Kharkov (1897), Odessa (1902–08), and Kraków (1910–14). From 1887 to 1889 and again from 1915, Rotert worked at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. His principal works were on the anatomy and physiology of plants (structure of the vascular membranes, crystalliferous cells, chromoplasts, phototro-pism, and chemotropism) and on taxonomy (mainly of the genus Sparganium).
