Tver School

one of the local schools of old Russian art of the 13th to 15th centuries; it developed in Tver’ during the period of feudal disintegration. Preserved works of the Tver’ school include icons and manuscript miniatures. They are characterized by expressive austere images, emphatic linearity, and intense color relationships. Examples include the miniatures of the Chronicle of Georgios Amartolos (V. I. Lenin Library of the USSR) and the icon Boris and Gleb (Kiev Museum of Russian Art), both from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. In the 15th century the Tver’ school developed further its original orientation toward the artistic traditions of the Balkan countries.
