Abo Peace Treaty of 1743

Abo Peace Treaty of 1743

concluded the Russo Swedish War of 1741–43, which had ended in the defeat of Sweden.

A. I. Rumiantsev and I. Luberas signed the treaty for Russia, G. Zerderkreuz and E. M. Nolken for Sweden. The pact was signed in Abo (Finland) on August 7 (18). In the course of the negotiations, Russia agreed to limit its territorial claims on the condition that Adolphus Frederick—prince of Holstein and first cousin once removed of Petr Fedorovich, the heir to the Russian throne—be chosen for the Swedish throne. Sweden agreed to this demand, and on June 23, Adolphus Frederick was chosen successor. The treaty (art. 21) established “eternal peace and friendship” between the parties and prohibited them from entering into hostile alliances. In confirmation of the Nystadt Peace Treaty of 1721, Russia’s territorial acquisitions in the Baltic region were acknowledged. Sweden ceded Kymi County with Fredrikshamn and Vilmanstrand and also part of Savolinna Province with Nyslott to Russia. The border was established along the Kymi River. Russia withdrew its troops from the remaining provinces of Finland.

The Abo Peace Treaty strengthened Russia’s position on the Baltic Sea and in the Baltic region and consolidated its defenses along its northwestern boundaries.
