Rashtrakuta
(1) A dynasty ruling in Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka in western India from 760 through 973. The Rashtrakuta state, with its capital in Manyakheta (now Malkhed), was the most powerful in India from the late eighth to the mid-tenth century. Vassal principalities and large communities paid approximately 25 percent of the gross harvest into the state treasury.
(2) A civil servant or landowner who was the administrative head of a region (rashtrd) in the Deccan (India) in the early Middle Ages. The rashtrakutas are mentioned in documents dating from the ninth to 11 th centuries.
