Pashkovskii Burial Grounds
Pashkovskii Burial Grounds
three flat-grave burial grounds near the settlement of Pashkovskii (now part of the city of Krasnodar). The burial grounds were excavated from 1929 to 1937 and from 1946 to 1966 by M. V. Pokrovskii, N. V. Anfimov, and K. F. Smirnov. The oldest, burial ground no. 3 (fifth to third centuries B.C.), belonged to one of the Maeotae tribes. Many weapons and much clay pottery, including amphoras, were discovered in the graves. Burial ground no. 2 (first to third centuries A.D.) gives evidence of the influence that nomadic Sarmatians who settled in the Kuban’ area had on the local Maeotae population. Burial ground no. 1 (fourth to sixth centuries A.D.) was left by the descendants of the Maeotae population. These descendants were the ancestors of the Adygeians. The archaeological finds resemble those from the Black Sea burial grounds in the area where the Zikhi settled.
