(1) The Slavic rendition of the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew name Bathsheba; one of the wives of King David of ancient Israel and the mother of King Solomon.
According to the Bible, David sent Bathsheba’s first husband, Uriah, to a certain death in order to marry her himself. Punishment for this deed, severely condemned by the prophet Nathan, was the death of the first child of David and Bathsheba. Bathsheba’s legend has been reflected in literature and art.
(2) The Slavic rendition (in the Bible) of the Greek transliteration of the city Beersheba.
