Semevskii, Vasilii
Semevskii, Vasilii Ivanovich
Born Dec. 25. 1848 (Jan. 6, 1849), in the city of Polotsk, now in Vitebsk Oblast; died Sept. 21 (Oct. 4), 1916, in Petrograd. Russian historian.
Semevskii graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1872. From 1882 to 1886 he was a privatdocent at the university; he was dismissed from this post because of his allegedly harmful views. For many years he was a private tutor. In 1891 he made a trip through Siberia for the purpose of consulting archives.
Active in public life, Semevskii joined in the protests made by the St. Petersburg intelligentsia against the autocracy’s repressive measures. He was arrested in January 1905 and briefly detained. That same year he served as chairman of the Committee to Assist the Released Shlissel’burg Prisoners and on the Committee to Assist Political Exiles. In 1906 he became a member of the Popular Socialist Party. In 1913 he helped found the journal Golos minuvshego (Voice of the Past) and was one of its editors.
As a historian, Semevskii was oriented toward liberalism and Narodnichestvo (Populism). He studied the history of the peasantry, of the working class, and of the liberation movement in Russia. His works, written from a democratic point of view, incorporated abundant documentary material. Semevskii did not make broad generalizations, believing that an objective presentation of facts leads to correct conclusions. His works have retained their importance as compilations of reliable source materials. Semevskii became a member of the Society of Russian Literature in 1880 and of the Free Economic Society in 1895.
