Established: 1996.
Location:40 miles northeast of Richmond, Virginia.
Facilities:Outdoor classroom, trails (é), fishing pier (é).
Activities:Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, fishing, educational programs.
Special Features:Archeological and historic sites are abundant on both sides of the Rappahannock River. Old pilings can still be seen from the days when steamboats made regular stops to pick up produce and passengers for transport to the Port of Baltimore.
Habitats: 7,393 (of 20,000 proposed) acres of cropland, upland, wetland, and marsh.
Access: Wilna unit is open daily sunrise to sunset; access to all other units is limited; contact refuge office.
Wild life: Endangered or threatened American bald eagle, peregrine falcon, shortnose sturgeon, and sensitive joint vetch. also provides habitat for wood thrush, Acadian flycatcher, grasshopper sparrow and northern bobwhite.
