Semen Ivanovich Gordyi

 

Born 1316; died Apr. 27, 1353. Russian political and military leader; grand prince of Moscow (from 1340) and Vladimir (from 1341). Eldest son of Ivan I Danilovich Kalita.

Semen Ivanovich Gordyi pursued a conciliatory policy in his relations with the Golden Horde and waged a struggle against the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He strengthened his rule in Novgorod by carrying out a successful military campaign against Torzhok in 1341.
