Sludge Basin

a waste purification installation for desiccation of sediments (sludge) deposited from sewage during settling or from sewage left to decay in digestion tanks. The basic part of the installation consists of leveled-off plots of land surrounded by earthen banks, through which sludge conduits extend for the supply of sediments. Damp sediments from settling tanks or fermented sediments from digestion tanks or other units are periodically accumulated in a shallow layer in the sludge basin and dried somewhat. As a result of this drying the water content of the sediment is reduced by 20–25 percent, and they acquire a texture of moist earth. They are then taken away as fertilizer for farm lands. Sludge basins are generally set up on high-filtering natural ground (sand, sandy loam) or on artificial foundations with drainage facilities.
