Takasaki (täkäsä`kē), city (1990 pop. 236,461), Gumma prefecture, central Honshu, Japan. A transportation and industrial center, it produces computers and computer components and has textile factories, machine and metal plants, food-processing plants, and breweries. It is known chiefly for its statue (130 ft/40 m high) of Kannon, goddess of mercy.Takasaki a city in Japan. Situated on Honshu Island, on the right tributary of the Tone River, in the central part of Gumma Prefecture. Population, 200,000 (1974). Takasaki is a transportation junction and the trade center for a silk-producing region. The city has textile industry, mainly the processing of raw silk. There are also enterprises of the garment, paper, and flour-milling industries, as well as plants producing textile machinery and electrical instruments. |
