(täkä`ôkä), city (1990 pop. 175,466), Toyama prefecture, W central Honshu, Japan, on the Sho River. A center for the Japanese aluminum industry, Takaoka also produces paper, copper, and chemicals.Takaoka

A transportation center, Takaoka has enterprises of the chemical, machine-building, cotton, wood working, and food-processing industries, as well as aluminum and metalworking plants. The Takaoka-Toyama Industrial Complex is under construction.
