Taiwan Uprising of 1947

a popular uprising on the island of Taiwan. When China regained control of Taiwan in October 1945, the Chiang Kai-shek government established a policy of political repression against the Taiwanese, which aroused local resistance. On Feb. 28, 1947, residents of Taipei staged a demonstration to protest the murder of several Taiwanese by agents of the Kuomintang tobacco and liquor monopoly. Troops opened fire on the demonstrators, killing and injuring a number of people. The outraged residents seized the radio station and urged the population to join in an armed rebellion. The rebels seized all the major cities of Taiwan and held them until Mar. 8,1947. The uprising was crushed by Kuomintang reinforcements from the mainland.
