Slovyansk

(sləvyänsk`), city (1989 pop. 135,000), E Ukraine, in the Donets Basin. It is a railroad junction and has salt and soda works. Manufactures include machinery, ceramics, and pencils. Nearby is a hot springs resort. Founded in 1676 as Tor, the city was renamed in the late 18th cent. The city was held by antigovernment rebels for several months in 2014 during the pro-Russian uprising in E Ukraine.
