Slovak Ore Mountains

Slovak Ore Mountains

(Slovenské Rudohorie), mountains in eastern Czechoslovakia, part of the Western Carpathians. Stretching for 140 km and rising to 1,477 m in Mount Stoli-ca, the mountains are composed chiefly of granite and schist with karst limestone occurring in places along the periphery. They are medium-elevation mountains with isolated residual peaks. The southern slopes are covered largely with oak and beech forests, and the northern slopes with conifers. Deposits of iron and copper ores, antimony, gold, and magnesite are mined at Rudniani, Dobšina, Gelnica, and elsewhere. [23–1708–]
