adult osteomalacia

A generic term for bone disease characterised by poor mineralisation, which overlaps with osteoporosis, but differs therefrom in that there is calcium deficiency due to low dietary calcium or lack of vitamin D, and phosphate deficiency due to renal loss.
Aetiology
Low intake of calcium and vitamin D or phosphorus, renal tubular acidosis, chronic renal failure, malnutrition, malabsorption, hypophosphataemia, anti-convulsant therapy, coeliac disease, cancer-related osteolysis.
 
Clinical findings
Begins with vague symmetrical pain, increased bone sensitivity, proximal muscle weakness, difficulty in climbing stairs.
Imaging
Pseudofractures.
 
Management
Pharmacologic doses of vitamin D.
